Acne is a skin condition that presents with whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and sometimes deep, painful sores known as cysts or nodules. The condition is caused by blocked pores and typically appears on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Although there is no definitive reason for why one person may suffer from acne and another person won’t, experts do know that heredity plays a role.
There are currently 17 million Americans suffering from acne, making it the most common skin disease in the country. While it affects mostly teenagers, adult onset acne can be just as common and generally shows up on the chin and cheeks. At some point everyone experiences some form of the condition due to hormones, which increase the activity in oil-producing glands. Although acne is not life-threatening, it can cause physical disfigurement (scarring) and emotional distress.
Treatment for acne varies depending on the type and severity of lesions, as well as the patient’s skin type, age and lifestyle. Options include:
- Topical Medications
- Blackhead Extraction
- Photodynamic Therapy
- Skin Care
- Blu-U Light Treatments
- Laser Treatments
Acne scarring can be treated in a variety of ways as well. These include:
- Chemical Peels
- Soft Tissue Fillers
- Laser/Pulsed Light Treatments
